Hello, this morning i attended my first grading to gain my first yellow tag. I pulled off all the moves to 100% accuracy which i was really pleased about, at the thoery stage i was asked 2 questions, 1 being , what are the 5 tenants which i correctly answered and the 2nd being, (as the examiner put it) what are the names of the two knuckles you punch with, me not knowing that the instructor meant the meaning of forefist, which i knew, i therefore got the question wrong.
I am worried that because of this i may of failed the grading, if anyone can help me out here, i wish clarification on if you think i passed or failed, i only got that question wrong, i excecuted all the moves perfectly, what does this mean, did i pass or not!? i have to wait till 2mora to find out from my instructor, but if any of you have any views pleease post. thank you.

Greetings, sir:

I hope that all is well with you. I live in Centennial, Colorado, and my master was Grandmaster Sung Dal Cho, who, very unfortunately, passed away ten years ago. I have tried other schools, and other styles, and have not found the type of dojang that I would like to continue with. Those styles include ITF taekwondo, jujitsu, gung fu, and hapkido. In the hapkido school, where I trained last, though the floor was padded, the great number of body throws that we did resulted in my getting a brain hemorrhage, and having to have brain surgery. Needless to say, our instructor should have had us wear some kind of head gear. I was very disappointed, since, though I'm 55, I love to spar, of course in the right spirit. I see, now, the need to remain with my predominant style, chung do kwan, in which I reached the level of 3rd don. I don't care to join a school teaching Olympic style, or mixed styles, or where the hidden agenda is to form a profitable demo and sparring team. Could you help me find a traditional chung do kwan school, where the values of courtesy, integrity, humility, and sincerity are still taught? I would be most grateful. Thank you. I wish you well in all of your endeavors.

Sincerely,
Dave Earnhardt

Manaloa: Weight training can certainly be beneficial to the martial artist as a supplementary exericise, just as it can be helpful in many other areas of life.

However, I beleive flexibility to be more important than strength in Tae Kwon Do; in order to perform techniques correctly, good flexilibity is very important. (Of course, "good" is a very relative term, and we won't all be equally flexible.) And, of course, strength is not one of the five elements of the theory of power (speed, equilibrium, breath control, concentration, reaction force).

If you plan to continue weight-lifting while doing TKD training, I would suggest doing fairly substantial stretching exercises as well (but probably at a different time, such as prior to TKD training). This way you can probably at least maintain (and perhaps increase) your flexibility as you add muscle.

I can not leave my info but, I can say this about the following exchange. Whoever is teaching you folks one step sparring or grabbing self-defence is doing you a terrible diservice. If taught properly many of these techniques work quite well. The real key in a street fight (and I speak from experience) is to stay ahead of the fight. See the action before it happens. There is no way I know to teach this...you either can do it or you get your clock cleaned. If you can see it (how to counter an attack), the technques work. Train differently, put on your sparring gear go after each other full speed and power. You will find out quickly that locking up someones wrist or elbow can be accomplished at a variaty angles.

Actually, Grandmaster Duk Sung Son brought Tae Kwon Do to America. He tought Joon Ri in South Korea, trained the army there and then moved to the US in the 1960s because of political turmoil. He is the founder of the World Tae Kwon Do Association, and he teaches the original form of Tae Kwon Do, which includes no-contact sparring, no weapons other than those of the body, and few belt ranks (white, yellow, green, purple, brown, 1st Dan black, etc). Some critics claim it is passe, but I for one consider the other schools have gone awry, making contact in sparring, using weapons not of the body, and the like. One reason Grandmaster Son left Korea was because he was a strong teacher, not to mention practitioner, of the art, leaving the weaker ones behind, not to be bothered by the government. Those arrogent students left behind started their own associations, some even that had only attained a yellow belt under Grandmaster Son. I apologize for any misconceptions that you may have been told, and wish your whole school luck in the future.

hi,
well i have already mentioned my name and there is no point in repeating it. I am an accountant by profession but taekwondo has always been my passion . i started takin taekwon do lesson from the most senior martial artist of pakistan Master Nadeem Isphani at the age of 10.
I am really thankful to Mr. Nadeem who not only taught me intricate and most advance techniques of taekwondo but also helped me in learning the real philosphy of the sport.
It really helped me when i entered the corporate world and always gave me a competitive edge in every walk of life.
The one thing which i learned from Mr Nadeem was never to quit whether its the sparring or preparing for Chartared Accountancy Exam or givin an interview to a panel of experts . Tae kwon do gave me this confidance and also taught me to motivate myself in the most bleak times of life .
As far as my taekwon do achievments are concerned i was the member of Pakistan national team for 9th SAF games.
I also represented the provincial team of Sindh in 28th national games and Karachi city team in Sindh games.I Have always been able to secure first or second position in every tournament i have taken part . The flip side of the coin is that i was disgusted to see how sports and politics was mixed in our sports arena which really made me think seriously about my future as a sports man and then i decided i should concentrate on my studies and only take taekwon do to keep myself fit and to stay in shape.
anyways i guesss i have written too much for u guys to digest so i betta sign off

There are many different aspects to Tae Kwon Do training. Yes, sometimes we practice statically, as in one-step sparring, so as to learn moves and techniques and have time to think about what kinds of techniques might be applied in certain situations (and there are usually many options); but we also do dynamic exercises, such as free sparring, where the two opponents move around and try to fit techniques to openings while trying to avoid presenting openings themselves, and being prepared both to block and to attack. Hosin-sul (self-defense) exercises can also be taught dynamically as well as statically.

As to what you say about adreneline: that's simply not how it works; adreneline does not cause one to be tired out more quickly. Naturally, rigid techniques applied with insufficient power and understanding will not avail much; but it's not reasonable to then say that the entire art is useless. It all depends on how one learns and applies it, and everyone will get something slightly different from Tae Kwon Do, depending on what they put into it, and on how it is taught.

I'm not aware of any particular focus on the high kicks to the head that you refer to. Rather, the focus is often on looking for and anticipating openings and being able to place kicks, punches, strikes, et cetera to those openings intelligently, quickly, and with power. That's not easy, and different people will pick that up with differing degrees of speed and facility.

No, Tae Kwon Do is not simply a sport. There is certainly sport Tae Kwon Do, which has a somewhat different focus than traditional Tae Kwon Do. But when properly learned, Tae Kwon Do certainly does aid in self-defense. We could argue for a long time about how much, and compare it to other systems, as has been done here in the past; but that's beside the point. Tae Kwon Do can provide very useful techniques for self-defense, but it also provides much more than that. Not everyone who practices Tae Kwon Do does so for self-defense purposes. There are many reasons why people may choose to train in the martial arts, whatever that art happens to be.

how are students supposed to develop timing in one step situations? when is the last time an aggressor purposely missed with a punch and left his arm out to be grabbed in a real life situation?
in free sparring how are students to know what it feels like to be hit or to hit someone if contact is never made?"

Exactly.

I studied Tae Kwon Do from age 6 to about 15, and I can tell you that from my experience I understand why I've never seen or heard of anyone succesfully defending themself in a street fight based on what he learned from Tae Kwon Do or Karate. The teachers drilled us into learning proper stance and kicking form in order to achieve optimal power and speed without sacrificing balance. The problem is that this is inherently flawed. Nobody will ever allow you to kick them in the head the way we were taught, and if you kick their hip or thigh it won't hurt them one bit as they charge at you, ready to tackle you full force, pull your hear, punch your eyes, and stomp your groin. TKD and Karate simply do not teach practical defensive techniques, they only teach one how to perform rigid and predictable movements. Oh, and neither really stress the importance of size, since size matters very much, contrary to what Blue Life, Empty Hands and Tiger Schulmans tell you. Street fights last no more than 30 seconds. They are over quickly, because once the adrenaline kicks in, you lose your focus and your energy is spent much more quickly. Now imagine that situation, and wasting your energy on useless stances and chambering movements. Your opponent, probably pissed off at you enough as it is, would charge at you with all of hsi energy and take you down. Karate and TKD are sports. Even if TKD and Karate students were trained to focus in a real fight (as in, random, chaotic, unpredictable situations with FULL CONTACT), there is no guarentee that their rigid movements or impractical high kicks to the head would actually work. Get it through your heads, karate and tae kwon do are SPORTS.

That said, they are truly great sports which are incredible tests of skill and technique on the mats, and are a lot of fun to watch.

I cant take taekwando from the other masters because their dojangs are too far.

All i can say is to all of you is be grateful for your Masters because if they arnt there to continue their guidance its a rough and helpless road.

Hey, Folks,

I'm a recent initiate to the Martial Arts. I've had 3 months of "light" training. I'm curious if anyone had any suggestions for a beginner. The Community College(Northeast Texas Comminuty College) that I attend has a Martial Arts class that is part of the Physical Ed. curriculum. I decided to take it, partly because I wasn't interested in anything else and partly because I have had an interest in the Martial Arts. My instructor is named Tom Seabourne; he's a 3rd degree Tae Kwon Do blackbelt and a 4th degree Seibukan blackbelt. Instructor Seabourne has competed in several tournaments before, so he is quite knowledgable beyond the scope of the blackbelt. The class is a mixture of Tae Kwon Do, Seibukan, and self-defense tactics. When we practice our forums, we're practicing some Tae Kwon Do(like Poomse), but it is mostly Seibukan. We practice combinations with pads, and I believe these to be mostly Tae Kwon Do. The self-defense aspect of it involves holds, grabs, and joint-locks. I have the utmost respect for my Instructor, but, to be honest, I'm a little disappointed with Instructor Seabourne. As I said, he is very knowledgable, but I find the interaction of the class to be...lacking in one-on-one training. I realize that my Instructor must follow the timeline set-forth by a school semester; therefore, I'm considering locating a local dojang to attend. The semester is completed, and I'm finding it difficult to practice by myself at home. It's almost like I force myself to practice, which that is not "fun." It's been a slow learning process for me, but I know that I can reach my goal of one day competing in tournaments if I work hard enough: after all, isn't hard work and dedication one of Tae Kwon Do's tenets?

I'm not sure why I picked this forum to post this information; I found it while I was doing a general Tae Kwon Do search, not really looking for anything specific. Perhaps I needed to tell my little story to fellow artist.

As Daniel mentioned no art is superior than another. I have been training for close to 20yrs in this time I have had the benefit of training with other styles and When I was teaching I encouraged instructors from other styles to come and give a demonstration and teach there style to my students. I believe that every style has aspects that suite each person differently therefore by obtaining as much knowledge from each style you encounter you will become the best martial artist that you can be.

Daniel-
Keep in mind that no martial art, no matter what anyone says, is superior to any other, it all depends on the practitioner.

someone mentioned jeet kune do in a recent post.
jeet kune do is very different than tae kwon do.
bruce lee in his last developments basically had developed a boxing based art with a few kicks.
jkd is superior to tkd mostly because of jkd's emphasis on boxing.

It's amazing how wide spread this is, I myself didn't think that TaeKwon-Do was such a large group here in the states. Though it's one of the best things that have ever happened to me. I quit in 3rd grade and regretted it ever since and then I was given another chance at it freshman year of high school. I look back to when I was a white belt and what I thought of the art and my plans for the future. Things turned out so differently, no longer is it so much of a physical aspect in training but a strong mentality to be there, which in turn affects the physical part. I can't get enough of Taekwon-do, I'm going to stick with this because I need it until I stop breathing. There's so much I want to know, and I always enjoy helping others. My plan for the future is to continue training and bettering myself in martial arts. Words cannot express my gratitude to Master Langlas who has taught me so much and given me a different view on life and Taekwon-do.

I studied Tae Kwon Do under Grandmaster Han Cha Kyo from the time I was ten until I was about 14 when he passed away. I'm 22 now, and in college, and I never got the chance to properly thank him for teaching me so much more than Tae Kwon Do. I was too young to realize that it is much more than a martial art. Now, I know that I wouldn't be as fortunate and I certainly wouldn't be where I am if I hadn't taken Tae Kwon Do classes. I am still training on my own and with the martial arts club at my university whnen I can. And, although I need a lot of work, I am still complimented on my technique. I know this is not because of any talent, but it is because the training I received was the greatest. I want wish the Han family and everyone there the very best. You will always have a place in my heart and in my mind. Thank You. Tae Kwon Do is forever.

For almost the last year my life has revolved around high speed nunchucks from a distance. The method of transmitting the hits could include computers and the internet, maybe other resources. Even more difficult might be to prove that this occurs or is possible. I don't have nunchucks and I don't really want to use them or engage in an internal civil conflict; the situation is almost becomming a civil war.
Using computers is my method of confronting the attacks on a lesser violence level I believe. Having discussed the method of descreasing the effectiveness of nunchukas with Paul Riser from NYC (Aliens) the Riser Fans, and others from the SJC area I've found Paul Riser's original statement to be true... 1.processing, the 2.Source, and 3.Destination is effective in shielding.
Also, I've found sometimes nunchuck groups don't like shields and there's been complaints from the Chuck Norris Fans, Seagal group, Staltin (who has helped, been a victim of, complained, and almost (FRYied)).
Where does envolvement with nunchucks end? My final complaint is with the use of metalick nunchukas.

There are new group photos from the December 12, 2003 promotion test in the gallery.

As to TKD techniques, it all depends on what the student needs and/or wants out of the training. For example, in sparring competition, many people tend to use just a few selected kicks almost exclusively, rather than trying to use too many complicated techniques. There is something to be said for learning a wide variety of more advanced techniques, certainly; but the basic kicks are the most important ones. IMHO.

Just reading some past posts and it looks interesting enough. Just thought I would throw out some comments

TKD as mentioned has became more mainstream and to a degree "arobic" like. The actual basic training is situated like that, kick kick kick, punch punch punch. Where you might be missing out in getting a wide variety of training, you are indeed getting better at those techniques. It doesn't take long (typically 2-5 months) for students that attend regularly to get the basic techniques along with the stances down to a point where they do them correctly when they are trying. Basic self-defense and sparring also comes quickly. It really all depends on the instructor and his/her past experience. I find certain instructors enjoy free sparring, then you get more sparring in class and perhaps more tips and experience from that from their own personal experience. TKD is an unarmed combat art so most instructors don't really have experience and properly handling a knife in a fight. Most people who are going to attack you in the street aren't going to know how to properly handle one either. If you want to go get in fights with people that know how to handle a knife, go ahead, but you are realling missing the point of the art.

Also, I actually enjoy the fact I am not leaving practice with bruised and broken ribs. Some people have to go to work the next day and like to have all their fingers and bones in one piece. There are schools out there that say it is an art, looking at it, it looks more like abuse to me. Learning to take a hit is important, but there are ways of doing it without seriously hurting others. With law suits in this present day, it is just getting way too risky to do this anymore, and this does cause a lot of the more extreme arts to settle down their ways in this country.

Next, you will find a wide variety of training styles in any art. There are some schools in Karate that are better than others. It is possible a blue belt in TKD could take a 3rd degree in Karata and vice versa depending on training, environment and other variables. Some people are just better at certain things. It all comes down to how hard someone pushes themself during training and how hard the instructors pushes the students. If discipline isn't installed in the beginning of the training it won't be there 3 years later.

Just thought I would throw that out there. Enjoy

a quick hop-step side kick or a cross behind side kick? i like the quick hop-step for power as well as practicallity. the cross behind is too easy to counter by simply checking the hip with a front/push kick.

daniel: One-step (or three-step) sparring is a focused exercise, just one of many tools used to teach techniques. It doesn't have to involve everything all at once in order to be useful.

Free sparring with contact is sometimes done with protective gear, so that students do get used to making contact and having contact made on them. But no-contact free sparring teaches students how to aim, how to move, control, et cetera; in order to make contact (when needed) one just moves the aiming point toward the target.

how are students supposed to develop timing in one step situations? when is the last time an aggressor purposely missed with a punch and left his arm out to be grabbed in a real life situation?
in free sparring how are students to know what it feels like to be hit or to hit someone if contact is never made?
